What are Switching Power Supplies?

A Switching Power Supply (or SMPS) is a supply of electricity that has a switching regulator. It may be wondered why you would need this but the answer is simple. It switches a power transistor between completely on and then completely off. The main advantage of this is the amount of power that is used as it uses little power and so is both economic and green. Most devices tend to be small and light making them ideal for use with equipment that needs to be carried around. An ideal example of this is a laptop as no business meeting is complete without one nowadays.

Which Switching Power Supply Should We Choose?

It is important to look for a unit that is capable of giving you about 30% more power than you anticipate you will need. It is also important to make sure that the system does not overheat and decide if an additional cooling instrument is needed. All systems should have the correct safety standards and EMC regulations.

The fan may be audible and this should not be considered too much of a problem as by lowering sound the company will have to also lower its capability and this will only lead to the system not cooling as effectively as it should. Once it begins to overheat it is no longer as effective as it should be.

What Achieving ISO Means

It is important to make sure that a product has an ISO rating. ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization and although they are necessary to keep up with the other companies a lot of time is taken up preparing to qualify. For companies it appears as a feather in their cap and gives them something to tell their customers to let them know that the company is serious about the products they provide.

For the customer they can be sure that the product they buy has passed all possible tests and has been properly scrutinised. As there are so many different companies that provide switching power supply items, it is difficult to decide which one will be the most reliable. Most items nowadays will class as ISO Switching Power Supply products and competition will be strong. Standards are high and improving.
